    Fallout 3 Bringing User-Generated Content via G.E.C.K.

    By Cameron Sorden | November 25, 2008

Well, it looks like I’m going to have to buy the PC version of Fallout 3 now. They just announced the upcoming release of their world-builder tools (amusingly called the “G.E.C.K.”, which any Fallout fan will recognize), along with three pieces of downloadable content that will be rolled out as 2009 progresses. While the game is amazing on its own, this is what I was really waiting for. The Fallout community is just full of immensely passionate and creative fans, and I’m beyond excited to see what they do with this. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see someone try to recreate sections of the previous two games in the new engine within a year or two.

One of the DLC modules allows you to play the game past the main quest’s ending, which is a badly needed feature. I was a little annoyed in my first play-through when the game just ended before I really had a chance to explore, even if the ending was incredible. Here’s the full press release from RPGwatch:

Bethesda Softworks Announces Creation Kit and First Downloadable Content for Fallout 3
Editor to be Available in December; Downloadable Content coming for January, February, and March

November 25, 2008 (ROCKVILLE, MD) – Bethesda Softworks®, a ZeniMax Media company, today announced plans to make both its editor and downloadable content available for its award-winning game, Fallout® 3 in the coming weeks. The official editor for Fallout 3, called the G.E.C.K. (Garden of Eden Creation Kit), will be available for free download in December and will allow Games for Windows® users to create and add their own content to the game. In addition, the first official downloadable content, Operation: Anchorage, will be available exclusively for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Games for Windows® in January, and more downloadable content coming in February and March.

“We’ve always seen the original world of Fallout 3 as a foundation for even more content. Some created by us, and a lot more created by users,” said Todd Howard, game director for Fallout 3. “It’s fun to create your own character, but it can be equally fun to create your own adventures. We can’t wait to see what the community does with the G.E.C.K.”

The release of the G.E.C.K. provides the community with tools that will allow players to expand the game any way they wish. Users can create, modify, and edit any data for use with Fallout 3, from building landscapes, towns, and locations to writing dialogue, creating characters, weapons, creatures, and more.

Three downloadable content packs will be coming to Xbox 360 and Games for Windows Live starting in January that will add new quests, items, and content to Fallout 3.

    • Operation: Anchorage. Enter a military simulation and fight in one of the greatest battles of the Fallout universe – the liberation of Anchorage, Alaska from its Chinese Communist invaders. An action-packed battle scheduled for release in January.
    • The Pitt. Journey to the industrial raider town called The Pitt, located in the remains of Pittsburgh. Choose your side. Scheduled for release in February.
    • Broken Steel. Join the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel and rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. Continues the adventure past the main quest. Scheduled for release in March.

I dunno… I think you’d have to *REALLY* get into Fallout 3 (or whatever else) to want to play mods of it. I’m not sold on the game at all yet; it’s been a resounding “great at first then meh” on the blogs I’ve read and I tend to not last long in single-player RPG’s anyway. I can’t even imagine whiling my day away in something like Oblivion, for example, that’s so slow and I’m the only person in it.

If I get it, it’ll be a 360 rental first before I decide to buy it on 360 or Steam. I’ll not buy the PC boxed version; I’m not allowing SecuRom on my system for any reason whatsoever.

So who at Bethesda is sleeping with Microsoft? The original game is released on three platforms, but all downloadable content is released exclusively for Vista/360?

I’ve never been much of a MS hater, I was just glad to see Fallout3 on the PS3 as I still don’t trust the longevity of the 360 hardware (red rings abound). So to have gladly purchased the game for the playstation and be the *only* platform that won’t see downloadable content…ouch.

Other than that, I’m certainly eager to see what people do with the tools, having been an avid consumer of user-generated content in Morrowind.

Surprisingly, I have yet to hit a red ring of death. I even bought one of the early gen XBox 360s… I’ve just been lucky so far.

Re: the exclusive content, I’m sure it will be ported for PS3 shortly after its release. I think gamers would be too angry with Bethsoft otherwise (and justified).

I don’t keep track of the console DLC news, but doesn’t the 360 pretty much *always* get the exclusive DLC for the hot games and the PS3 gets nada? Not that it matters to me personally, I doubt I will ever own another Sony product, but plenty of PlayStation gamers would be equally anxious to play new content of their favorite games too.

I have both xbox 360 and PS3. I will not purchase a bethesda game ever again after they have favoured microsoft. They have shown their true colours….Get a mac you poor excuse for a gaming company.

With that attitude, your list of studios whose games you *will* buy must be a short one indeed…

Take it up with Steve Jobs, not the studios. He is to blame.

This is the true reason I have been wanting Fallout 3, DLC and the G.E.C.K (Which I like to call Game Editing and Creation Kit) Though I feel sad for the PS3 players, they don’t get as much DLC as Xbox 360 players do. Hopefully they will.

Just rented Fallout 3 a couple days ago. It’s… ok. I’ll probably get it sometime next year when the price drops, but I was growing bored (as I suspected would be the case) before I even got to leave the Vault and once I got out, I didn’t really care. Rental expired before I was in the mood to continue. That’s the reason single-player RPG’s “last” so long with me — they’re just too slow to keep me interested. I think it took me a year or more to complete Final Fantasy VII back in the day, and I’ve never completed one since. I thought I’d finish FFX but didn’t get around to it. I’m committed one way or another to finish Mass Effect though. Someday.
