The Age of Reckoning is Upon Me

    By Cameron Sorden | September 29, 2008

I promise I’ll do a real post soon (work has been crazy), but I wanted to mention that I’ve finally purchased Warhammer Online and I’m playing a Swordmaster on the Averheim server. My character name is Aelryn, so feel free to throw me a tell if you see me online. I’ll be playing as much as I can until Wrath of the Lich King launches, at which point I’ll try to play both. Realistically, I’ll probably have to pick one. Even more realistically, it will probably be World of Warcraft. Even so, I had a lot of fun on Sunday romping around in WAR.

Two things really jumped out at me, compared to when I played it in beta: 1) the combat complaints I had have been fixed — my Swordmaster moves fluidly through his stances and fighting is actually very fast-paced, especially the PvP, and 2) Public Quests annoy me.

Why do public quests annoy me? Because they feel rather grindy, but I still feel compelled to do them. Also, the best way to “win” them (and have a shot at those sweet purple bags) is to get everyone in a big warband so no one can get ahead by straight kills and then screw your teammates by waiting until they engage enemies and using the objects at the various activation stages. Hint, WAR designers: Make it so that ALL influence earned is shared by everyone in your warband, not JUST kill influence. It makes me cry inside when I’m tanking elite enemies for my group and some jackass nabs the object they were guarding while I get +7 inf for my 30 seconds of battle.

Oh, and tanking? Tanking is awesome in WAR. A million times better than tanking in WoW. It’s easy and low stress as a Swordmaster, and I’m a badass tank even at low levels.
