Riddle Me This
By Cameron Sorden | August 27, 2008
Is anyone else bothered by the fact that promotional World of Warcraft materials always show characters in cool-looking, matching outfits, when in fact your character’s outfit will never match in color or style until end game raiding (and then only if you choose to use all your set pieces)?
They should really do something about that: Appearance tab for the win. Just disable it in arenas.

It looks like that because they assume everyone will take the 80 hours to grind faction and raid for complete sets of armor once they blow through the 10 “new” levels in the expansion.
I know I wont, so I definately will not look like that.

It takes way more than eighty hours.
I liked how my Druid looked, but then again, I played like 30 days worth to get her that way!

While this was true in the Burning Crusade (hello clown-like outfits!), Wrath of the Lich King seems to be doing a lot better with your Northrend quest-reward greens. Howling Fjord and Borean Tundra are the two starting zones and for plate all the quest rewards look about the same. WHICH IS NOT A BAD THING. It looks like they made this general set for your level 70-72 greens, then put that to all the quest items for that zone, with slight changes each reward. For instance, the first plate chest piece I got was fully black, whereas the second plate chest piece I got was the exact same model, but with a small red design flowing through it. This allows minor changes in each item but a flowing design overall. ALL the quest rewards from Northrend from level 70-80 ALL look like they could fit together though. While not the exact piece for the set, they all share the general feel. Everything has a very cold Nordic feel to it. So when you see those screen shots from WotLK, that IS what you will be experiencing.

Indeed! I match really well in the WotLK beta.
Also, that shot you’re using to demonstrate .. isn’t that the Lich King? Well, regardless, it’s in the Death Knight starter area. And Death Knights match really, really well because they all look very much alike until they get out into the real world. Almost like they are an army in uniform … *grin*

I haven’t seen EQ2’s appearance tab first-hand yet, but it seems like a great idea.
I like having armor sets in a game, but I’m not a fan of making them optimal or the norm. Visual individuality can be a powerful fun factor.
