    DC Universe Online

    By Cameron Sorden | August 18, 2008

Being a diehard Marvel fan, I haven’t really been following or interested in DC Universe Online. I mean, Batman is cool, but there are just so many lame DC heroes. Still, I decided to go look for some DC Universe Online footage on YouTube just to see how it stacks up to what we’ve been seeing of Champions. All I can say is this: Oh. My. God. I respect Cryptic’s vision and the work they did on CoX, but… this footage of DCUO from Comic-con is amazing. I think SOE gets it, because this is most definitely not the same old, same old.

Granted, it’s actually a pretty short gameplay sequence, but put side by side next to even the better Champions videos, DC Universe just looks hands-down more exciting and awesome. This is what a superhero MMOG should look and play like, in my opinion:

There’s also a preview up at the GameInformer site. Go check it out: lots of great info about what’s in store for us. Honestly, this game sounds like pretty much the coolest MMOG coming out for some time, given that I’ve been looking for something a little different lately.

Now this is more like what I’m talkin’ about! Just because it’s a MMOG doesn’t mean we need frickin’ hotbars out the wazoo, slow running, standing still playing whack-a-mole combat. This also shows it can be done on the console with a slimmed-down action UI rather than the overblown crap we’re used to in our fantasy MMOGs.

Just too bad it’s DC and PS3, neither of which I’m interested in… make a good MMOG for my 360 and I’m in!

      Maybe they’ll port it?

Yeah, okay… originally I wasn’t as hard as you were on Champions Online, but seeing that? Yup, DCU appears to kick CO’s butt in gameplay. I’ve been waiting for a superhero MMO that gave you some of the capabilities of the old Freedom Force CRPG (i.e. using everything in the environment).

I wonder how character creation, customization and growth works.

Sony? Make a 360 version? SONY? hahahahahaha

Even then, it’s DC. DC sucks.

I was about to make a post comparing the speed of movement and combat, etc. of CO to the upcoming Star Wars: Force Unleashed but the DCU video pretty much makes the same point. Heroes aren’t slow unless they’re retired. And no one gives a crap about Geriatric Man.

Yeah, I love the movement… it looks like a blast to play.

And, sigh… you’re probably right. Looks like I’m going to have to buy a PS3, since that looks like it would be more fun with a controller.

It’s good to see developers realizing that MMO don’t have to boring games based on slow and boring combat/movement.

      Swing… swing… swing… heal… swing… Skill 1… swing… swing… heal.

It’s sad when it actually takes more to describe an MMO’s combat than it does to actually perform it. Oh, and it is more fun describing it too.

If this game came to the PC… it’d make for some serious competition.

It will be on PC. Both PC and PS3.

I have to concur… that is most certainly awesome.

It looks like it may be more fun on a console, but no way in hell am I buying a PS3 for one game. Especially considering it’s been out for a year and there are still ZERO good games for it. (Good meaning would appeal to ME)
