Back with Some Cool Surprises
By Cameron Sorden | June 14, 2008
I just got back from my week-long “vacation” at North Dakota’s Boys State (it’s a mock ND-government that teaches boys about participating in government, responsibility, civic duty, and good citizenship), where I was the counselor for the newspaper. I say “vacation” because my average working day there was 12 hours long, topping out at 15 on one day (try putting a daily newspaper together sometime when you effectively function as both the primary editor and a layout guy). But still, it was a really great experience. I had a blast, and it was fantastic to see the boys take pride in what they were doing and slam an entire newspaper together in just 12 hours each day, having never done it before. It was also fun to reconnect with the program organizers and a good friend of mine from high school who also works at the program (and is running for the ND State House right now, at 23—he’s a sharp guy).
When I got home, I had two great surprises waiting for me in the mail: my D&D 4th edition book set, and a copy of Jim Rossignol’s This Gaming Life, which he generously provided to me for review after an e-mail discussion we had on my “Putting raiding on your resume” article. I’ll probably have time to read that and get a review up soon, and I plan to look through the D&D manuals more thoroughly as soon as I have time (though I noticed a distinct lack of bards, druids, and monks—WTF? No druids?).
It seems like as soon as I get home, I have to hit the road again: I have an interview with a marketing firm in Seattle on Thursday which I’ll be flying out for (the final one in long a series of interviews), and I’m really hoping they’ll make me an offer. Also, I’ll be jumping back into the saddle on Monday after my week-long reprieve from writing. If you think 12-hour days are taxing, imagine what it would have been like if I was writing this week too. Still, I got a few drafts done for articles (I took Captain Angry’s suggestion and started structuring my articles in advance last week; we’ll see how it goes).
The coming weeks could get pretty busy, indeed, depending on what happens this week (and yes, I’m still active in my World of Warcraft raiding guild, which is now three bosses into Black Temple). Stay tuned for more.
