I’m Going to London For the Rest of My Life
By Cameron Sorden | November 4, 2007
I bought a lifetime subscription to Hellgate: London this morning. The game is ridiculously fun and gives me the same Diablo vibe I’ve been missing the last few years. There’s something immensely satisfying about the game, especially when playing multiplayer. The action gamer in me loves slaughtering countless hordes of foes. The item collector in me will be amused for a long, long time by accumulating different sets of gear for my characters. And the RPG fanboy in me digs the setting, the quests, and the character advancement.
I know I’m gambling quite a bit by buying a lifetime sub. They have a lengthy list of promised features they need to deliver and no proven record of doing so. I guess if I get burned here, I’ll have learned an important lesson about Caveat Emptor. But I have hope for a brighter tomorrow. Plus, I just guaranteed I’ll always have a fun twitchy game to go and blow some steam off on until someday when Flagship closes and the servers burn down.
So I guess we’ll see. If I’m still playing in 16 months and constantly being amazed by the great new content, then cool. If not, this will probably be the first and last lifetime sub I ever buy.

I actually wish I had the cash for this one. I know it’s early. I know it’s bugged at launch and rushed a bit. But I also know how much I loved replaying Diablo 2 (and still do). Knowing that 150 dollars ensures I get all non-boxed expansion content… it’s a great deal if the game keeps growing and has the funds to do so well.
Instead, due to lack of 150 bucks on my part, I’ll be paying 10 bucks a month here or there whenever a new content update hits.

Ok Cam, this post enticed me to try the demo. I loved it! So I just bought the game. Unfortunately I guess I’m not eligible for the lifetime?
Anyway, terrific fun. Bugs here and there. I haven’t managed to actually get into a group yet

Yeah, you needed to pre-order for the lifetime offer. However, if Turbine is any indication Flagship will probably make a similar offer to everyone else in the near future at a slightly higher price.
If you ask around at your local stores, they might still have a pre-order box or two. I think you can apply the code retroactively.

Sounds like a smart move to me. You’ll eventually get bored with Hellgate, like any other game, but it’s the sort of game that might last you months and then you’ll come back to it for months at a time later on. It was a good investment.
I’d be playing it now, but I unexpectedly got 2 beta invites at once… and now I have no room on my computer for Hellgate! I’ve got the game, but I won’t be able to play it until I decide to uninstall something. I have music recording software and other non-gaming stuff on this computer. Anyway, this is one problem I definitely didn’t foresee.

Well, no lifetime for me I guess, unless I manage to find a pre-order box hidden on a shelf someone forgot.
I did get a 3-month sub though. Mainly because during installation I couldn’t get away from the screen that kept prompting me to subscribe. I didn’t notice until afterwards that there’s a small line with no text at the bottom. Turns out it’s a progress bar. It was moving so slowly I only happened to catch a pixel move out of the corner of my eye after I’d clicked everything I could find, subscribed, etc.
That’s definitely a bit shady… at least put some text saying what’s happening.
Anyway, having fun playing pretty casually. I’ve only managed to get into one group. Duo but hey, more than one is a group right?
I think a GW approach to buying extra content might have been better, though we can’t really say for sure until they actually start putting out new HGL content to judge.

For Talyn and any others who wished they could have bought a lifetime deal for Hellgate, they just re-opened up signups until 2008.

I think that’s just an extension of the original offer, Aaron, not a new offer open to everyone.

Right, I still have to
mug someonestumble across a pre-order box somewhere to qualify for that. All in all, I’m fine with the 3-month sub for the time being. Let ‘em patch the game up and let us actually see first-hand how the premium vs. free is handled. I’m already subbed to… too many games right now and am going to cut back on a few. Station Pass is first to go, EQ2 just doesn’t cut it for me and SWG isn’t the SWG I remember. So I’ll just keep VG and leave it at that.
