A Day in The Life of an SOE’er

    By Cameron Sorden | November 4, 2007

Discovered via Scott Hartsman’s blog, you should watch this news segment on MMOG development at SOE.

Despite making gamers sound like huge nerds, it’s a pretty good segment. This is the kind of informative and positive media I don’t mind seeing on local news stations. Also, it’s pretty funny to listen to the anchor pronounce words like “demon,” “spellcasting,” and “fantasy” as though she’s speaking a foreign language (with care and difficulty).

One thing which I thought was interesting was the short section on game testers. Many people will tell you that working in QA as a game tester is one of the paths into the games industry, if that’s what you want to do with your life. I thought it was cool that they not only talked to the testers about their jobs and the perceptions of their families, but then also made the link in the news segment that someone worked their way up from a QA job where they “get paid to play videogames” into a better job.

Of course, it’s obvious that all of that business was smoke and mirrors for the TV crews. You know that five minutes after they left everyone went back to raiding and eating pizza. ;)
